Chair of JOY® · Get Started
Everything you need to place a Chair of JOY® in your school, workplace, hospital, or community — where it belongs, how to find one, who leads it, and the simple steps to open your doors.
A Chair of JOY belongs anywhere people move through their day carrying more than they show. It is always placed on private or organizational property, with the permission of the property owner or organization — making it a flexible community wellness initiative for schools, workplaces, healthcare settings, and beyond.
The chair adapts to its setting as a flexible emotional wellness program for schools, families, and communities. In a hospital corridor it is a breath for a caregiver at the end of a hard shift. In a school courtyard it functions as a social emotional learning tool — a soft landing for a student carrying something they cannot name. In a workplace lobby it reminds employees that pausing is not weakness, supporting workplace wellness and burnout prevention.
The color is the signal, welcoming before anyone reads a word.
A ground stake or weighted base keeps it steady through weather and foot traffic.
Four simple steps anyone can follow, no guide needed, on their own time.
A Chair of JOY® in a hospital setting — one of many places it belongs.
Donors help fund the full cost of opening a new Chair of JOY® location, including the chair, sign, brochures, registration, and placement support.
Schools, hospitals, workplaces, libraries, faith communities, nonprofits, and community spaces can request a Chair of JOY® to be placed on their property.
Finding your chair is part of the experience. A Chair of JOY® can begin as a simple wooden chair found at a thrift store, donated by a community member, or repurposed from a space that already has one.
The only visual requirement is that iconic yellow remains the dominant color.
Some of the best Chair of JOY chairs have come from thrift stores, rummage sales, furniture consignment shops, and friends who had one sitting in the garage. Wooden chairs are perfect because they are sturdy, easy to paint, and built to last.
If you shop on half-price day you might walk out with a chair for a dollar. One dollar. That chair could go on to serve hundreds of people.
Ask around. Check your local buy-nothing group. Put the word out that you are looking. Reusing a chair that would otherwise be discarded makes the whole thing feel even more right.
A toddler-sized chair at a pediatric clinic tells children: this space is for you too. An adult chair in a corporate lobby makes a bold, unmissable statement. Every size carries the same invitation. Every size wears yellow.
The Chair of JOY® model can be simple and low-cost. Chairs may be sourced secondhand through thrift stores, donations, community members, or existing spaces. Each chair is painted the signature yellow, safely anchored, paired with a brochure holder, and registered as part of the growing Chair of JOY® network.
A finished setup — painted, anchored, and ready with its brochure holder.
"One yellow chair can serve hundreds of people and create a place where people can reset, reconnect with themselves, and shift their perspective."
Every Chair of JOY® location is registered at chairofjoy.org and added to the growing network of active chair locations.
This helps the movement track placement, support local Chair Leaders, collect stories, and show the expanding impact of the Chair of JOY® experience.
Every Chair of JOY® has a named Chair Leader — a teacher, nurse, CEO, volunteer, neighbor, faith leader, community advocate, or staff member who helps care for the chair.
The Chair Leader helps maintain the chair, restock brochures, check that the chair remains visible, collect stories when appropriate, and keep the experience alive week to week.
Sheryl Lynn set out the very first Chair of JOY seven years ago — and became its first Chair Leader.
No wellness certification required. No clinical background needed. Just genuine care and a commitment to checking in on the chair each week and keeping the brochures stocked.
When the Chair Leader is not present — which is most of the time — the self-guided brochure walks anyone through the full experience. Four simple steps. Pick it up. Sit down. No one needs to be there with you.
Checks in weekly to refill the experience cards. The brochure is the most important thing beside the chair.
A quick weekly check: wipe it down, straighten it, confirm the sign is in place. The chair should always look like someone cares about it.
A QR code on the brochure lets people share what the experience meant. The Chair Leader forwards meaningful ones to the Chair of JOY story library.
Chair of JOY is a wellness experience. The brochure notes clearly that clinical resources are available for those who need more. The Chair Leader knows how to make that connection warmly and without alarm.
Every registered Chair Leader receives support materials that may include:
